colon specialist Q: What is a Colon and Rectal Surgeon?

A: A Colon and Rectal Surgeon is a fully trained general surgeon, certified by the American Board of Surgery who has then had an additional year or more of subspecialty training in diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus.

Q: What is required to be Board Certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery?

A: Board certification requires 5 or more years of General Surgery training, passage of written and oral examinations in General Surgery, an additional year or more of training in an ACGME certified program in Colon and Rectal Surgery and passage of written and oral examinations in Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Q: Is Dr. Shuck Board Certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery?

A: Yes.

Q: What are some of the diseases or conditions that you treat?

A: Hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses, fistulae, pilonidal cysts, dermatological conditions including itching and fecal incontinence, to name a few.

Q: Anything else?

A: Colonoscopy, for diagnosis and for screening to detect asymptomatic colonic polyps and prevention of colon cancer.

Q: Are you accepting new patients?

A: Yes, Dr. Shuck is currently accepting new patients.

Q: What insurances do you accept?

A: Dr Shuck is a participating provider in most insurance plans; however, there are some plans that he is considered “out-of-network.” It is important for you to verify with your individual plan whether your visits will be considered “in-network” or “out-of network.”

Q: Do I need a referral?

A: Unless it is required by your insurance plan, you do not need a referral. If your insurance is an HMO plan, you may need a referral from your primary care physician. Please check with your insurance company to determine if a referral is necessary. The referral, if required by your plan, must be obtained prior to your appointment.

Q: Do you accept Medicaid, TennCare, PeachCare, etc.?

A: No.

Q: Is Dr. Shuck still performing major abdominal and major cancer surgeries?

A: No. Dr. Shuck has recently limited his practice to office-based treatments and minimally invasive out-patient surgeries of anorectal diseases and conditions, as well as diagnostic and screening colonoscopies.
